Traditional models of sports facilities have proven inadequate in addressing sustainability challenges, and the escalating energy costs and climate-induced water scarcity are exacerbating the situation. Furthermore, most of the sports facilities in Europe were built before 1990, without considering energy efficiency criteria. In light of these concerns over their environmental impact, the need for a transformative shift towards sustainable management practices has become paramount.
Recognizing the pivotal role of sports facilities in society’s well-being and development, the Enhance Sustainable Measures In Sports Facilities (ESMIS) project aims to transform them into fully sustainable structures.
The ESMIS project will harness cross-sectoral collaborations, knowledge exchange, and policy interventions to achieve its objectives. It aims to lead a paradigm shift towards sustainable sports infrastructures by integrating environmental considerations into sports practices and maximizing sustainability measures throughout Europe.
The launch of the ESMIS project marks a significant milestone. Held on the 4th and 5th of March in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and hosted by the project leaders Cluster Sport and Technology, the project kick-off meeting witnessed dynamic discussions and the exchange of ideas and visions. Project partners – European Platform for Sport and Innovation, Olympiacos SFP, Sport Ireland, INDESCAT and UCLM – delved into the concept of innovation in sports facilities, laying the groundwork for a future where sustainability takes centre stage in the world of sports.
Within this framework, Cluster Sports & Technology will be responsible for leading the project consortium and making sure that all project goals and objectives are followed. During the kick-off meeting we presented some innovative approaches from Eindhoven and set the groundwork for a successful project that can make impact across Europe for years to come.
By disseminating critical insights and lessons learned, the ESMIS project aims to empower informed decision-making and the implementation of best practices across Europe, fostering a more sustainable and resilient sports sector that aligns with economic, social, and environmental objectives.
